Treatment Overview

What is MeRT?

Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, or MeRT, is a non-surgicalnon-invasivedrug-free, emerging technology. In simple terms, we use MeRT to reprogram irregular electrical signals in the brain. By doing this, we can modify behavior.

The MeRT protocols use brainwave analysis to isolate specific areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating the way they should. Then, using specialized equipment, we gently stimulate those distinct brain areas that lead to improved function.

Treatment overview involves getting a qEEG to measure the pattern of electrical signals in a patient’s brain. This diagnostic study tells us what is not functioning properly and helps us determine how the brain should be operating. We then create a precision treatment protocol using a set of magnets placed on the scalp. These send electrical signals back into the brain to stimulate and organize the function of neurons. This process is called neuromodulation.

Your brain’s electrical activity, brain waves, or thought patterns are unlike anyone else’s.  Just like your fingerprint, your brain waves are uniquely your own.

The human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Through electrical oscillations or brain waves, the neurons control how the brain functions.  Whenever internal or external forces disrupt normal brain activity, dysfunction can occur. That’s what makes our approach so cutting edge.

Treatment Overview

We begin with our diagnostic tools, a qEEG and an EKG (electrocardiogram). These tests measure brain wave frequencies, heart rate, and brain-heart coherence, and we use them to determine the current brain state. With the information from the qEEG, we can create a brain “map” that identifies patterns of dysfunction consistent with various disorders like brain injury, emotional disorders, learning problems, and behavioral issues.

Once we complete these tests, our scientific and clinical teams will carefully analyze the results and determine the current state and functioning of the brain.

When you come in for your first appointment, we will perform the qEEG and EKG as mentioned above in the Treatment Overview section. These tests will help us evaluate brain activity and show us any dysfunction. The qEEG, or brain mapping, is a valuable tool as lets us customize treatment for YOU.

The qEEG/EKG testing is performed by our chief neurotechnician and takes approximately 45 minutes. However, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, please plan on spending an hour with us.

We will also gather your new patient paperwork at this time, and get you scheduled for your initial assessment period of treatment.

Your second appointment will be a clinical evaluation with with our physician, which takes approximately 45 minutes. You can have this appointment via Telemedicine or in-clinic, whichever you prefer.

During this consultation, our physician will answer all your questions and discuss your applicable treatment plan.

As part of our treatment overview, we use a patented, scientific approach with the testing data. This approach allows us to develop a highly customized treatment plan which can encourage healthy brain communication and function.

During your treatment session, you will sit in a comfortable chair while the neuro technician administers this gentle treatment near the scalp with a hand-held magnet.

While you may feel a slight sensation during treatment, it is not painful or uncomfortable. We deliver magnetic pulses for six to eight seconds during each minute of treatment.

The equipment we use for MeRT treatment has been FDA-cleared to treat depression and can be used off-label to treat many other disorders.

Following the initial assessment period of treatment, we will perform an additional qEEG and EKG. This lets us assess your progress and modify your treatment as needed. By doing this, we take the best and most exacting approach to your treatment, based on the current state of your brain patterns.

Common Benefits from MeRT*

  • Based on double-blind clinical trials and retrospective case studies, individuals with autism spectrum disorder have seen the following benefits from MeRT:
  • CARS score: 50% of individuals saw a 30% improvement in CARS score, corresponding to a significant change in ASD severity.
  • Sleep: 70% of individuals with sleep disturbances saw sleep patterns restored to normal.
  • Communication: 66% of individuals with verbal and nonverbal communication difficulties experienced improvement.
  • Eye Contact: 70% of individuals with difficulty maintaining eye contact experienced improved eye contact behavior.
  • Learning Capacity: 50% of individuals with diminished learning capacity experienced improvement.
  • Improved sleep
  • Better concentration and focus
  • More Relaxation
  • Enhanced memory and mental clarity
  • Reduced pain
  • Better mood and more emotional stability
  • Less Stress
  • Increased attention span
  • Improved sociability
  • More motivation
  • Fewer cravings for drugs or alcohol
  • Improved adaptation to change
  • Better self-confidence and self-esteem

Six weeks of treatment is recommended for patients undergoing MeRT in order to achieve optimal and long-lasting results. However, prior to committing to the six weeks, we have each patient first go through an assessment period of treatment to see how they will respond. This assessment period is included in the six weeks of treatment.

The assessment is  two weeks long. It consists of nine treatment sessions followed by a repeat qEEG. Treatment would be provided the first week, Monday through Friday, and the following week, Monday through Thursday. A typical treatment session lasts about 30-45 minutes.

Additionally, the follow-up qEEG results will be covered with you by your provider.

If clinical changes are occurring as they should, and the qEEG also shows progress, then you would then continue treatment which would occur five days per week, Monday through Friday. Generally, you will begin to feel the benefits of treatment within a week or two, but because treatment is cumulative, should continue to note improvements throughout the course of your treatment, and even for some weeks after treatment. Because treatment is consecutive, you must be able to stay in or around the area while undergoing your therapy.

If clinical changes are occurring as they should and the qEEG also shows progress, you will then continue treatment. This ongoing treatment occurs five days per week, Monday through Friday. You should start to feel the benefits of treatment within a week or two, but because treatment is cumulative, you should continue to note improvements throughout the course of your treatment, and even for some weeks afterward. Additionally, because we perform treatment on consecutive days, you must be able to stay in or around the San Diego area while undergoing your therapy.

Because each person’s brain and condition are unique, we customize treatment protocols specifically for each patient, guided by the qEEG results. And repeat qEEGs and clinical consultations occur every two weeks throughout treatment.

As a note, the potential side-effects of treatment are minimal and should begin to dissipate as you progress through treatment. Moreover, the effects of treatment generally last a lifetime, though some patients prefer occasional follow-up treatment as needed.

For those not ready to commit to an assessment period, or if we need to see the results of the testing to confirm that MeRT can help, we also offer the option of coming in for a qEEG/EKG and then having a consultation with the physician to go over the results. After your clinical consultation, you will still have the option of going through an assessment period should you choose to do so.

It is important to note that improvements and results of MeRT are based on strict and active observation of our treatment protocols. Results may vary based on each person and are not guaranteed.
