MeRT for Parkinson

Exploring an Alternative Treatment for Parkinson’s

While this condition is progressive, it is possible to see improvements in symptoms and delay progression.

This treatment is now available at the Brain Treatment Center. It’s called MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.

Parkinson’s and MeRT

At the Brain Treatment Center Houston, we offer a groundbreaking approach called MeRT for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. MeRT, an advanced version of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), is customized to each patient’s specific needs, targeting the frequency, location, and power required for optimal brain modulation. By utilizing magnetic fields that pass through the scalp via an electromagnetic coil, MeRT effectively modulates the brain’s electrical activity.

While the equipment used in the neuromodulation process is FDA-cleared for treating medication-resistant depression, it can also be used off-label for various other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and dementia. This non-invasive and pain-free treatment method has shown promising results.

Before beginning the modulation treatment, we conduct a quantitative EEG to precisely determine the frequency of your brain activity. MeRT, which stands for magnetoencephalography-guided repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, is designed to stimulate specific regions of the brain involved in movement and coordination, such as the basal ganglia and cerebellum. The targeted magnetic pulses elicit a response in neurons, leading to potential improvements in motor function.

Multiple studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of MeRT in reducing motor symptoms, tremors, and enhancing motor control, gait, and balance in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, ongoing research explores its potential in treating other neurological conditions like stroke and traumatic brain injury, showing promising preliminary results.

While MeRT is generally considered safe, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, or fatigue. These effects are typically temporary and subside shortly after treatment. As with any medical intervention, it is essential to consult with your doctor to assess the risks and benefits associated with MeRT specifically for your condition.

At the Brain Treatment Center Houston, we strive to provide innovative and personalized treatments to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions regain control of their lives. Our dedicated team is here to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and support you on your journey towards improved well-being.

Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the degeneration and loss of specific neurons in the brain. These neurons are responsible for producing dopamine, a chemical that plays a crucial role in brain function. The decline in dopamine levels leads to abnormal brain activity and the manifestation of Parkinson’s symptoms. While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, medications are available to help improve these symptoms.

The exact causes of Parkinson’s disease are not fully understood. Both genetic factors and environmental influences are believed to contribute to its development. In rare cases, specific gene mutations can lead to Parkinson’s, often when multiple family members are affected. Additionally, ongoing exposure to certain environmental factors, such as herbicides and pesticides, may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s later in life, although this is relatively uncommon.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive condition, meaning that symptoms worsen over time. While the underlying causes and cure for the disease remain unknown, ongoing research aims to better understand its mechanisms and develop more effective treatments to manage its symptoms.

What is MeRT?

MeRT, short for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is an innovative treatment approach that combines various technologies to provide personalized care. It integrates Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), an FDA-cleared therapy for Depression and OCD, with Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to analyze and formulate treatments based on each individual’s unique brain pattern.

Unlike conventional TMS treatments that deliver stimulation to a single brain area at a fixed frequency for all patients, MeRT takes a more advanced approach. We conduct comprehensive testing and evaluation to determine the appropriate frequency and location specific to each patient. This customized approach is grounded in scientific analysis and tailored to the individual.

By thoroughly analyzing the initial brain function and activity patterns of each patient, we can identify areas requiring neural synchronization. Based on this detailed analysis, we create a highly personalized treatment protocol to enhance brain communication. Many of our patients have reported significant clinical improvements with this approach.*

For Parkinson’s disease treatment, the duration typically spans four to six weeks and can be conducted alongside other therapies. Treatment sessions are scheduled for 30 to 45 minutes, Monday through Friday. Remarkably, many patients have noticed positive changes within the first week of treatment.*

The MeRT Process

MeRT offers a non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive approach to treatment.

Numerous studies have revealed altered brain wave oscillations in patients with conditions like Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety, and more. The MeRT treatment protocol utilizes a magnetic field to rebalance and stimulate brain function. This cutting-edge technology incorporates advanced diagnostics and imaging techniques to tailor the treatment to each individual’s specific needs.

A significant portion of the initial research on MeRT has been conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense, focusing on veterans returning from combat. Defense One has published an article providing further insight into the Department of Defense’s research and the benefits that MeRT has shown in individuals suffering from TBI, PTSD, and MDD. Additionally, private sector studies have been conducted on various other conditions, expanding our understanding of MeRT’s potential benefits.

MeRT Treatment for Parkinson’s: What to Expect

To begin the assessment process, we invite you to schedule a comprehensive testing appointment. During this appointment, our dedicated team will collect your new patient paperwork, ensuring we have all the necessary information. Our chief neuro technician will then conduct a thorough examination, including a quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) and Electrocardiogram (EKG). These diagnostic tests provide valuable insights into the functioning of your brain and help us identify any potential dysfunction or communication issues.

We understand the importance of your time and strive to make the assessment process as efficient as possible. Typically, the initial appointment lasts about 45 minutes. However, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, we kindly request that you allocate an hour for the appointment to ensure we have ample time for a comprehensive evaluation.

Once the initial assessment is complete, and if you decide to proceed with treatment, we will schedule your assessment period. This period allows us to gather further information and tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.

If you prefer to have your qEEG and consultation done before committing to the assessment period or treatment, we offer the option of coming in for a separate qEEG/EKG and consultation with our clinician. This allows you to review your results and ensure that you are a suitable candidate for treatment before proceeding with the full assessment period.

Your second appointment, the clinical evaluation, is approximately 45 minutes in duration. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet with your provider, who will address any inquiries you may have and discuss the treatment plan that is most applicable to your situation.

Assessment Period

The treatment assessment period spans a duration of two weeks, during which we closely monitor your response to the treatment. This period is crucial for both you and our team to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the treatment. At the conclusion of the assessment period, we will conduct a second qEEG to assess any changes in brain activity.

Once the two-week assessment period is completed, you will have your initial qEEG/EKG session, followed by two weeks of treatment sessions. The treatment sessions will be scheduled from Monday to Friday in the first week and from Monday to Thursday in the second week, totaling nine sessions. To gauge your progress, a follow-up qEEG will be conducted after the two-week treatment period.

This comprehensive approach allows us to closely monitor and adjust the treatment plan based on your individual response and ensures that we are targeting the areas of your brain that require attention.

Continuing Treatment

Once the assessment period is concluded, and we observe positive clinical progress and improvements on the qEEG, we will proceed to schedule subsequent two-week treatment periods. To maximize the benefits and ensure long-lasting results, we highly recommend staying for a full six-week treatment program, including the initial assessment period.

The comparison between the initial and second qEEG/clinical evaluations will help determine your response to the treatment. During this time, you should begin to notice changes in how you feel. We strongly encourage the full six weeks of treatment (including the assessment period) to achieve optimal and sustained outcomes.

Since every individual’s brain is unique, the treatment protocol will be tailored specifically to you based on the detailed qEEG/EKG data from your brain and the specific condition being addressed. In general, the results of the treatment can have a lasting impact, potentially lasting a lifetime. However, some individuals may prefer occasional follow-up treatment as needed. It’s important to remember that each person is different, and treatment protocols may vary accordingly. Your provider will schedule regular follow-up EEGs and meet with you to assess your progress along the way.

Additional Information

Each treatment session typically lasts about 45 minutes. During the session, you will be seated comfortably while the neuro-technician administers the treatment near your scalp using a hand-held magnet. The magnet will deliver gentle magnetic impulses for six to eight seconds per minute. While undergoing the treatment, you may experience a slight sensation, but rest assured that it is not painful or uncomfortable.

It’s important to note that the results and improvements achieved through the therapy are dependent on actively and strictly following our treatment regimens. The outcomes can vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. Additionally, the response to therapy may differ for each individual. Generally, the duration of MeRT therapy plays a role in the longevity of the changes observed.

Please keep in mind that the effectiveness of the treatment and the duration of its effects can vary based on individual factors. Our goal is to work closely with you to create the most appropriate treatment plan and monitor your progress throughout the therapy.
