A Non-invasive and Drug-Free Treatment of ADHD

ADHD (formerly known as ADD) stands for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This condition affects millions of children and can often continue into adulthood.

This treatment is now available at the Brain Treatment Center. It’s called MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.

Simply stated, we use a magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function, guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics. It is completely non-invasive and drug-free.

Currently, the cause for ADHD is not known, but research is ongoing. Genetics may be involved and problems with the central nervous system can also contribute.

Preliminary research has shown that there is a link between gut health and ADHD. Additionally, some studies show that certain food preservatives or dyes can also contribute to attention disorders in children.

A Multifaceted Approach to ADHD Treatment: Medication and Behavioral Therapies.

To address the symptoms of ADHD, healthcare professionals often prescribe a range of medications. These medications aim to regulate neurotransmitter levels in the brain, helping to alleviate and manage symptoms. It’s important to note that while these drugs do not provide a cure for ADHD, they can provide significant symptom relief. Non-stimulant antidepressants may also be prescribed as an alternative option, although their effects may be slower and carry the risk of potential suicidal thoughts.

In addition to medication, behavioral therapies play a crucial role in managing ADHD. Various approaches, such as social skills training, psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy, can be employed to enhance coping mechanisms and improve overall functioning. These therapies focus on developing effective strategies and skills to navigate the challenges associated with ADHD.

By combining medication and behavioral therapies, individuals with ADHD can receive comprehensive and tailored treatment, empowering them to better manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

MeRT.

At the Brain Treatment Center Houston, we offer a specialized treatment called MeRT for individuals with ADHD. MeRT, a unique version of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), provides a highly individualized approach to modulating the brain. By customizing the treatment parameters such as frequency, location, and power, we ensure that the therapy aligns with each patient’s specific needs. This non-invasive and painless process utilizes magnetic fields that pass through the scalp via an electromagnetic coil, modulating the brain’s electrical activity.

Traditional TMS treatments typically deliver stimulation to a single brain area at a fixed frequency for all patients. However, MeRT takes a more advanced approach. Through a comprehensive analysis of a patient’s initial testing, including brain function and activity patterns, we identify the precise neural synchronization required. This detailed assessment enables us to create a highly personalized treatment protocol aimed at enhancing brain communication. Many patients have reported significant clinical improvements as a result of this approach.

The duration of MeRT treatment for ADHD typically ranges from four to eight weeks, with appointments lasting 30 to 45 minutes, Monday through Friday. Patients often start noticing improvements within the first week of treatment. Following the completion of the treatment course, additional follow-up treatment for ADHD is usually unnecessary.

While the equipment used in MeRT treatment is FDA-cleared specifically for the treatment of medication-resistant depression, it may also be used off-label for various other disorders in the practice of medicine, including ADHD and other learning disorders.

The MeRT Process

MeRT: A Non-Pharmaceutical and Non-Invasive Breakthrough

Research has demonstrated altered brain wave oscillations in individuals with various conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety, and more. To address these conditions, the MeRT treatment protocol employs a magnetic field to rebalance and stimulate brain function. This innovative technology incorporates advanced diagnostics and imaging to customize the treatment for each individual, ensuring a personalized approach. We meticulously tailor a unique protocol based on factors such as the specific location, frequency, and power of the magnetic stimulation, taking into account the individual’s distinct condition. As a result, MeRT has the potential to enhance brain communication and synchronization, leading to significant and enduring improvements.

The initial research on MeRT has largely been conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense, focusing on veterans returning from combat. An article published in Defense One provides further insight into the Department of Defense’s research and highlights the benefits of MeRT for individuals with TBI, PTSD, and MDD. Additionally, various studies conducted in the private sector have explored the application of MeRT for other conditions.

Preparing for MeRT Treatment: What to Anticipate

Preparing for MeRT Treatment: What to Expect

To initiate the process, you will be scheduled for a comprehensive testing appointment, where we will collect your new patient paperwork. Our certificate neuro technician will then conduct a thorough qEEG and EKG assessment. These tests are designed to identify any brain dysfunction or communication issues.

Typically, this appointment lasts approximately 45 minutes. However, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, please allocate an hour for this visit. Should you decide to proceed with treatment, we will proceed to schedule your assessment period.

If you are not yet ready to commit to the assessment period or prefer to confirm your candidacy for treatment, we offer the option of a qEEG/EKG and consultation with our clinician. This allows you to review your results before proceeding with the assessment period.

Your second appointment will last 45 minutes. During this session, you will have a clinical evaluation with our physician. He will address any questions or concerns you may have and discuss the appropriate treatment plan based on your specific needs.

Assessment Period: Evaluating Progress and Customizing Treatment

The Assessment Period: A Two-Week Journey

During the assessment period of treatment, which spans two weeks, we closely monitor your response to the therapy. This period serves as a crucial opportunity for both you and our team to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the treatment.

At the end of the two-week assessment period, we will conduct a second qEEG to observe any changes occurring in your brain activity. This follow-up evaluation helps us gain valuable insights into the impact of the treatment and guides us in tailoring the ongoing protocol.

To commence the assessment period, you will undergo an initial qEEG/EKG. Following this, you will attend treatment sessions for two weeks. During the first week, sessions will be scheduled from Monday through Friday, and during the second week, sessions will be held from Monday through Thursday, totaling nine sessions.

Upon completing this intensive treatment phase, we will perform a repeat qEEG to assess your progress and make informed decisions about the next steps in your treatment journey. Our aim is to continually monitor and adjust the treatment plan based on your unique response, ensuring optimal outcomes for your well-being.

Continuing Treatment

Continuing Treatment: Enhancing Progress and Ensuring Long-lasting Results

Upon successful completion of the assessment period and observing positive clinical and qEEG progress, we will proceed to schedule subsequent two-week treatment periods. It is important to note that each treatment period spans two weeks, requiring you to be able to stay in Brain Treatment Center Houston for the duration of the treatment.

To maximize the benefits and ensure enduring results, we strongly recommend a comprehensive six-week treatment program, which includes the initial assessment period. This extended duration allows for a more thorough and sustained therapeutic intervention.

During this time, we will conduct a comparison between the initial and second qEEG assessments, alongside clinical evaluations, to assess your response to the treatment. As you progress through the treatment, you should start to notice positive changes in how you feel, indicating the effectiveness of the therapy.

Since every individual’s brain is unique, the treatment protocol is customized based on specific qEEG/EKG data and the particular condition being addressed. Generally, the results of the treatment can have long-lasting benefits that extend throughout a lifetime. However, some individuals may choose occasional follow-up treatment as needed. It is important to understand that treatment protocols may vary as each person’s journey is distinct.

Throughout your treatment, your provider will conduct regular follow-up EEGs and hold meetings to evaluate your progress and determine the ongoing course of action. Our commitment is to provide continuous support and tailor the treatment to your individual needs, ensuring optimal and long-lasting results.
