MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. It is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment for autism that is tailored to each individual based on sophisticated diagnostics.
MeRT utilizes rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), which uses magnetic fields to gently stimulate specific areas of the brain. This stimulation helps to improve connectivity and function in the brain, which can lead to improvements in symptoms of autism such as speech, eye contact, and connection.
The diagnostics used to tailor MeRT to each individual include a qEEG (a quantitative Electroencephalogram) and an EKG (an Electrocardiogram). The qEEG allows us to see patterns of dysfunction in the brain, while the EKG helps to ensure the safety of the treatment.
MeRT is a safe and effective treatment for autism. It has been shown to be effective in improving symptoms of autism in a variety of studies. If you are interested in learning more about MeRT, please talk to your doctor.

Parents often find themselves overwhelmed upon receiving a diagnosis of autism, recognizing the significance of early intervention in their child’s development. We deeply empathize with the heartbreak experienced by parents who have invested considerable efforts to assist their children with autism or ASD (autism spectrum disorder), only to witness limited progress. Many believe that their child possesses untapped potential that remains elusive.
To address these challenges, the Brain Treatment Center Houston offers a revolutionary solution known as MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. By utilizing gentle magnetic waves and employing advanced diagnostics and imaging, MeRT aims to rebalance and stimulate brain function.
As the pioneering clinic for MeRT in Houston, our facility stands as the flagship center. We have been dedicated to treating autism at the Brain Treatment Center for several years, and the outcomes observed with this therapy have ignited renewed hope among countless parents.
At our clinic, we hold children’s well-being in the highest regard, and we are committed to accompanying you and your child on this journey. Our mission is to provide compassionate care throughout the entire process.
Common symptoms of autism characteristics can include:
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, combines three procedures:
1. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS, an FDA cleared therapy),
2. Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and
3. Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).
Here’s the process: By analyzing the electrical signals revealed in an EEG of a child with autism, we can identify distinct variations compared to a child without autism symptoms. These specific areas of concern serve as our guide to tailor the MeRT treatment for each child. Taking into account the EEG results, we customize the frequency, location, and power of the treatment. Our approach involves the use of gentle magnetic waves that effectively rebalance and stimulate brain function.
“With the quantitative EEG data, the brain’s electrical activities are analyzed; in particular is there alpha activity, at what intrinsic frequency is it occurring, and is it consistent or synchronized throughout the brain? Often, patterns can be identified.
“For example, in our autism population, we often see disruption or absence of synchronous alpha activity in the frontal lobe region. With the EEG data, an individualized treatment protocol is created… the location and frequency of magnetic stimulation are determined based on the EEG/EKG data. And this is important.
“Regardless of a person’s age, gender, or diagnosis — whether you have a level one or level three autism diagnosis or whether with that you have ADHD or Sensory Processing Disorder — your treatment protocol is solely based on your own unique brain activity.
“And that is why that little ‘e’ in MeRT is so important: We don’t just provide magnetic resonance therapy — we are providing an EEG/EKG-guided magnetic resonance therapy, individualized to you.
“And when you think about it this should be the case. Even though two kids can have the same autism diagnosis, they can be very different in their behaviors and development. So it should be expected that their brain treatment protocol would be unique to each of them.” – Dr. Sandy Lee, speaking at the Autism One Conference, December 2020
To determine if MeRT treatment is suitable for your child, we can arrange an appointment for a qEEG (quantitative Electroencephalogram), a simple, painless, and non-invasive brain scan. This comprehensive test allows us to gain precise insights into your child’s brain activity, enabling us to personalize the treatment to their specific needs.
During your initial appointment, which typically lasts around 45 minutes to an hour, we will assist you in completing the necessary new patient paperwork. Our skilled neuro technician will conduct the qEEG and EKG evaluations to assess your child’s brain activity. Following the qEEG appointment, we will collaborate with you to schedule the assessment period should you decide to proceed.
Once we receive the results of the qEEG, our team of experienced doctors and scientists will thoroughly analyze and interpret the data. This analysis enables us to determine the potential benefits of treatment for your child and design a tailored treatment program.
Your second appointment, lasting approximately 45 minutes, involves meeting with our Certified Neuro-technician for a clinical evaluation. During this session, she will address any inquiries you may have and discuss your child’s treatment plan. It is important to note that Dr. Brown oversees treatment for every patient, ensuring comprehensive care.
At this stage, you can decide whether to proceed with a short period of initial treatment. This assessment period allows us to evaluate your child’s response before committing to the full treatment period.
If you are not yet ready to commit to the assessment period of treatment, that is perfectly fine. You can bring your child for the qEEG and consultation, and Dr. Brown will review the results before proceeding with the assessment period.
MeRT: A Non-Pharmaceutical and Non-Invasive Breakthrough
Research has demonstrated altered brain wave oscillations in individuals with various conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety, and more. To address these conditions, the MeRT treatment protocol employs a magnetic field to rebalance and stimulate brain function. This innovative technology incorporates advanced diagnostics and imaging to customize the treatment for each individual, ensuring a personalized approach. We meticulously tailor a unique protocol based on factors such as the specific location, frequency, and power of the magnetic stimulation, taking into account the individual’s distinct condition. As a result, MeRT has the potential to enhance brain communication and synchronization, leading to significant and enduring improvements.
The initial research on MeRT has largely been conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense, focusing on veterans returning from combat. An article published in Defense One provides further insight into the Department of Defense’s research and highlights the benefits of MeRT for individuals with TBI, PTSD, and MDD. Additionally, various studies conducted in the private sector have explored the application of MeRT for other conditions.
Preparing for MeRT Treatment: What to Expect
To initiate the process, you will be scheduled for a comprehensive testing appointment, where we will collect your new patient paperwork. Our certificate neuro technician will then conduct a thorough qEEG and EKG assessment. These tests are designed to identify any brain dysfunction or communication issues.
Typically, this appointment lasts approximately 45 minutes. However, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, please allocate an hour for this visit. Should you decide to proceed with treatment, we will proceed to schedule your assessment period.
